Nigerian Army Prepares For 162nd Day Celebrations

All is now set for the celebration of the Nigerian Army’s 162nd anniversary.
At a media briefing in Abuja, Wednesday the Chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General, Olufemi Oluyede outlined activities planned for the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
COAS who was represented by Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Gold Chibuisi, said the celebration, which began in 1978, commemorates the founding of the Nigerian Army and the start of the Civil War.
He announced this year’s theme as “Developing the Soldier,” focusing on improving the welfare and capacity of Army personnel.
Major General Chibuisi gave a brief history of the Army’s origin in 1863, when it was formed by Lieutenant Glover of the Royal Navy with 18 men.
He highlighted the Army’s growth over the years and its involvement in key national and international missions—including World Wars, the Civil War, and the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism.
He noted the Army’s continued role in maintaining peace in West Africa, protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, and supporting democracy.
Planned events include religious services, civil-military project commissioning in Kaduna, a golf tournament, medical outreach, public lectures in secondary schools, a major lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy, and an award ceremony for its annual literary competition.
The celebration will end on July 6 with a parade, equipment display, and award presentations in Kaduna.
